If you like mathematics, statistics, or science and would like to explore how to apply quantitative methods to investigate important health issues, then the Summer Institute for Training in Biostatistics (SIBS) is ideal for you.
The ICTS has invited Sue Hanken, Respiratory Care Manager in Pulmonary Diagnostics/Hyperbaric Medicine, to present on the use of pulmonary testing in pediatric and adult research. Pulmonary Diagnostics and Intervention, located on 3 PFP, is a Respiratory Therapy directed clinic which offers a full range of pulmonary tests. Complete pulmonary function testing is provided and arterial blood gas analyses, including pulmonary physician interpretation, are also performed. Cardiopulmonary exercise testing with gas exchange is available with the assistance of a pulmonologist. Bronchoscopy, interventional bronchoscopic, and pleural procedures are performed by pulmonologists in the two bronchoscopy suites with or without the assistance of mobile anesthesia.
One of the critical functions of the ICTS is the training of highly motivated scholars and participating staff for careers in clinical and translational research. This is the core function of this program.
The objective of the Iowa Summer Institute in Biostatistics is to provide biostatistical training and applied research opportunities to undergraduates. Priority for admission and support will be given to underrepresented minorities and disadvantaged students from small liberal arts colleges without a substantial statistical curriculum. Undergraduate junior or senior students with math or biological sciences backgrounds are encouraged to apply.
The ISIB will be 7 weeks: instruction will be through case based instruction of real biomedical research; computer laboratory training; projects, and clinical and translational research enrichment activities.
Advancements in clinical and translational research rely heavily upon the cultivation of successful collaborative efforts by an ever-growing community of interdisciplinary scientists. J.L. Cohen, Interim Vice President for Research at The University of Iowa, refers to the convergence of interdisciplinary teams charged with attacking extremely complex problems as "a very integrative concept." Cohen emphasizes collaboration, because it enhances professional training while allowing students to broaden and strengthen their experience base and familiarize themselves with knowledge outside of their focused disciplines. Therefore, the act of seeking collaboration between skills sets is advantageous for both research and training purposes.
Proper Procedures for Research Billing. In this videotape, Denise Krutzfeldt, UIHC Joint Office for Compliance, reviews the proper procedures for research billing, particularly as it relates to Medicare patients.
