KL2 Training Program

Program Components


The University of Iowa's Clinical and Translational Science Program (KL2) will support the research career development of clinical researchers who have recently completed professional training and who are commencing basic, translational and/or clinical research. The goal of this component is to foster the discipline of clinical research and, by increasing clinical research capacity, to expedite clinical and translational research. The program will accomplish this through a mentored program, bridging clinical training with research independence.


Program components include

  • Scholars are required to enroll in a formal didactic training program that culminates in the earning of either a MS or PhD in Translational Biomedicine
  • Scholars engage in a patient-oriented research project(s) under the guidance of a team of successful mentors
  • Scholars prepare a K-award application by the end of the award period
  • Scholars receive some salary support for 2 years
  • Scholars receive $5,000 annually in research support in addition to their salary support
  • Positions are available for scholars at the Assistant Professor, Associate, Fellow and Resident level

Eligibility


Program eligibility criteria include:

  • An appointment in the University of Iowa's College of Dentistry, Nursing, Pharmacy, Engineering, Liberal Arts and Sciences, Public Health, or Medicine
  • A doctoral level degree: MD, DO, DDS, PharmD, or PhD
  • Completed clinical training by time of program enrollment
  • One-year prior research training is preferable, but not required
  • Department commitment for a tenure track faculty appointment
  • Department commitment for 75% protected time to complete didactic training and research
  • A primary mentor with active funding who can provide research support to the scholar
  • At least one mentor from the mentor team must be an Institute for Clinical and Translational Science Program mentor
